871900510 is Arnalo Otegi’s prison number, a number that Spanish neofascism wants to subjugate as one of the most clear-minded and coherent politician of the last 10 years.
8719600510 is Arnaldo Otegi’s prison number, a number that Spanish neofascism wants to subjugate as one of the most clear-minded and coherent politician of the last 10 years. We cannot allow that and we won’t allow it. We are many people affected by this new act of state terrorism that is the kidnapping of Otegi and his colleagues and comrades, we have been once again deprived of an indispensable part of our freedom, our intelligence has been insulted and our dignity has been wounded. And we shall not keep quiet.
We share that number that only slanders those who gave it. We wear that number as a badge or as a sticker, as a t-shirt or in graffiti, we show it everywhere, converting it into a silent outcry. And we do that not because Otegi deserves it or because he needs more support than the other Basque Political Prisoners, but we do it because circumstances have made clear that his case brings out with particular clarity the contradictions of our false democracy, the misery of our institutions and the meanness of our rulers. His grotesque trial makes it a witness for the judgement of history that will not absolve its judges.
Like the Five Cuban patriots kidnapped by the U.S. Government, Otegi is criminalized and faces a long sentence for fighting against violence and to defend a political opposition to capitalist barbarism. Like Nelson Mandela in his day, Otegi is criminalized and faces a long sentence for fighting the persecution of his people and the denial of its identity. Like a hundred years ago the Dreyfus case highlighted the deep anti-Semitism of the French bourgeoisie, the Otegi case has clearly shown the alarming rise of violent Spanish nationalism which is a direct inheritance from the Franco regime, which is deeply anti-Basque (and anti-Catalan and anti-Galician…), supported by powerful sections of parliamentary politics and the media.
And like Dreyfus, Mandela and the Cuban Five, the strength of the facts tells us that Otegi is right and the facts are obstinate: as obstinate as the peoples struggling for their freedom. Therefore, it has gained wide international support which is growing every day and his abductors are forced to pay a high political price for their injustice. We can make and we will make that price unaffordable.
Nelson Mandela has used his prison number-4664-given to him when he was incarcerated for life on Robben Island, to fight against Aids. We use Otegi’s prison number-8719600510- to fight against another virus less lethal and epidemic: Spanish nationalism. “AIDS is no longer just a disease: it is a human rights issue”, was the slogan of Mandela, Simply by changing “AIDS” to “Spanish”, it serves us.
